The Talent Of The Auctioneer

The most widely recognized talent of the Auctioneer is undoubtedly his ability to "talk fast". The rhythmic chant developed over the decades as a means of creating excitement and moving the sale of property at a steady pace, is certainly the attention getter on auction day. The chant is very important. It has to be clear, smooth, easy to listen to and must have the proper rhythm. If the chant is unpleasant or annoying, it can have an adverse effect on the entire auction. Troyer & Associates’ Auctioneers are singing salesmen. They follow long standing Principles, Beliefs and Practices, among them:

  • Adjust to a forceful and demanding chant to create a sense of excitement and an urgency to purchase

  • Control the crowd in a positive manner

  • Adjust the speed of the chant based upon the bidding experience of those in attendance.

  • Be an expert at determining personality types

  • Influence bidders to bid once more without begging or slowing the pace of the auction

  • Anticipate a bidder’s intent and then respond accordingly

  • Be an excellent negotiator and a positive and uplifting communicator

  • Be alert and smiling at all times

  • Be courteous and show appreciation for attendance at the sale by thanking people

  • Keep the attention of the crowd

  • Know what to say and when to say it to increase the sale price of an item
